MOTORSPORTS
We knew that AEK president Marios Iliopoulos is a fast racing driver, and that the prototype Ford Fiesta he drives is powerful, but the top speed he achieved on a public road – in the context of the Achladokampos race – is extremely impressive.
The route of the Achladokampou Ascent, on the road that connects Nafplio with Tripoli, is one of the classic and timeless Greek motorsport: it is both highly technical and quite fast in its various parts.
In this year’s repeat of the Achladokampou Ascent last weekend (2-3/11), in one of those fast parts of the route, the Champion of Greece in recent years (and this year) in the top Formula Saloon category, Marios Iliopoulos, “broke the counters” with a top speed that reached 239.2 km/h.
That speed—revealed by the first incar shot of “Super Mario” released to the public—is breathtaking, given that he achieved it on a public mountain road in his beastly 650-horsepower Ford Fiesta racer.
The president of AEK succeeded in his attempt to come out victorious, as he did, in his duel with the Bulgarian multi-champion and experienced driver with participation in the European Championship, Nikolai Zlatkov – who traveled to our country to take part in this race with the explosive 850hp Audi Quattro S1 Pikes Peak.
It was an amazing duel, during which he broke the Ascension time record three times. The finish – after two passes by each driver – found M. Iliopoulos the winner by an impressive 9.77 seconds from Zlatkov, allowing the AEK president to celebrate an impressive victory.
We remind you that “Super Mario” has already made 6/6 in this year’s Climbing Championship and has already added – from the previous Omalou Climb – this year’s champion title to his trophies from previous seasons. The next – and last for this year – racing date is on November 23-24 for the Elassonas Climb.
