Liverpool’s attempt to extend their winning streak to 12 matches in the Premier League was thwarted on Wednesday night as they drew 3-3 with Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Despite a thrilling second-half performance from Mohamed Salah, who scored twice and appeared to have sealed the win for Liverpool, a dramatic late equalizer from Fabian Schar in the 87th minute left the Reds frustrated and unable to claim all three points.

Salah’s brace initially put Liverpool in a commanding position, giving them a 3-2 lead after Newcastle had equalized following an early Mohamed Salah goal. However, Schar’s header from a set piece ensured the points were shared, preventing Liverpool from extending their lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The draw still keeps Liverpool in first place, but their advantage has been reduced to seven points after Arsenal and Chelsea both secured victories over Manchester United and Southampton, respectively. The result also means Liverpool has maintained their impressive unbeaten run, which now stands at 17 matches without defeat in the 2024/25 season, a strong reflection of the team’s consistency under manager Arne Slot.

Despite the unbeaten run, the match against Newcastle highlighted several shortcomings, as numerous players failed to deliver when it mattered most. The inability to secure all three points can be attributed to lapses in defensive concentration and missed opportunities to put the game out of reach. While Salah’s efforts were crucial, the overall team performance, particularly in defensive situations, allowed Newcastle to capitalize and deny Liverpool a much-needed win. This will undoubtedly serve as a reminder for Slot and his side to improve in key moments if they are to maintain their position at the top for the remainder of the season.
