Eleven Formula 1 drivers have cost their teams seven figures each with their crashes at 18 GPs so far this season. Who are at the top of the list, and who are at the bottom.

Sergio Perez’s very difficult season this year keeps the Mexican Red Bull Racing driver firmly, after the Singapore GP, at the top of the list of the cost of damage caused by every Formula 1 driver in 2024.

The 34-year-old’s accident costs are in excess of €4m so far, with the bulk of that coming from his – through no fault of his own – accident with Kevin Magnussen on the opening lap of this year’s Monaco GP.

Logan Sergeant, who follows in second place, has caused Williams a loss of €2.7 million. This was probably also one of the reasons that led to his removal from the team after the Dutch GP at the end of August.

On the other hand, of course, the team’s other driver, Alex Albon, has caused damages that exceed 2 million. euro. The majority of the damage was due to his crash in Australian GP free practice, which damaged the chassis of the FW46 – the most expensive part of the ground effect cars, at an estimated cost of €615,000.

In the past the financial loss for teams from accidents was not a problem for them, but on the contrary in recent years – since the annual budget limit for each team began to be applied, which this year is 123.1 million. euro- causes complications.

In particular, the cost of accidents is deducted from the amount that teams have available to develop their car during the season, and this has critical implications for their competitiveness.

Indicative were the words of Red Bull’s advisor, Helmut Marko, after the Monaco GP that Perez’s accident “It’s clearly affecting us because it’s costing us about $2 million and with the budget limit that’s a big disadvantage.”

At the bottom of the list, the drivers who have caused the least financial damage to their teams this year are Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. Hamilton’s roughly €290,000 damage came from hitting the floor at the kerbs in Austria.

Of course, nobody beats Pierre Gasly, as the Frenchman hasn’t caused a single euro of team damage for the Alpine F1 team this year. Below is a detailed list of each driver’s loss in the 18 GPs so far in 2024:
