In a horrific crash at the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe race in Barcelona, Dylan Pereira’s Audi R8 crashed into the barriers and burst into flames. The driver managed to get out and the worst was avoided.
The accident happened in the first corner after the start of the race at the Montmelo circuit in Barcelona – the same one that is also included in the Formula 1 program. The race was part of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS event.
Dylan Pereira lost control after colliding with another car on the main straight, and crashed into the inside barrier of first the straight and then the first right-hand corner of the track.
In the collisions the car suffered extensive damage, and the fuel tank broke – even though the tanks of the cars in this event are subject to the very strict safety standards of the FIA.
The fuel leak caused a fire, and Pereira’s Audi R8 came to rest on the exit of the bend. A few seconds of agony passed, but the driver managed to unbuckle his seatbelt and get out of the car – to the relief of spectators, who erupted into applause at the sight of Pereira.
See below the VIDEO taken by one of the spectators who was at that moment in the central stand of the track:
