Fernando Alonso was diagnosed with an intestinal infection last week, which plagued him at the Mexican GP and continues now ahead of the Interlagos race this three days (November 1-3).
After the Mexico City race, in which the Spaniard retired due to debris entering a brake duct in his Aston Martin AMR24, the 43-year-old returned to Europe to undergo treatment for the intestinal infection he was diagnosed with last week.
This resulted in him being late to Interlagos, where the Brazilian GP will be held on Sunday (3/11), and consequently missing today and the scheduled press conferences and other events.
The treatment the Spaniard received in Europe, however, appeared to be paying off as Aston Martin confirmed that Alonso will take part as normal in free practice on Friday (1/11), as well as in Sprint Qualifying later that afternoon.
However, in the event that there are unforeseen complications with his health, his place will probably be taken by Aston’s reserve driver, Felipe Drugovic, in the three-day race in his home country.
Aston Martin’s official statement said: “The extra day of treatment delayed the plans for his journey for Brazil, but ensures he will be ready for this weekend’s matches”.
Despite the effects of the infection, Fernando took part as usual in Mexico’s three-day campaign, saying that “I’m not 100% well for the last few days. But I think this track is not too demanding in terms of G-forces and high speeds.”
