The Talladega Speedway on Sunday (6/10) saw the accident with the largest number of cars involved in the history of the American NASCAR Cup championship.
Talladega Superspeedway, Alabama, United States, is an oval with a long history of accidents in American Stock Car racing. In 2002 there had been an accident in the smaller Busch Series (now called Xfinity) category involving a total of 30 competitors.
And this year, the biggest accident in the major NASCAR Cup category occurred, in which a total of 28 cars were damaged: it happened in the 5th lap, out of 188 of the race, as the “swarm” of stock cars was compressed and their drivers were fighting for a good position .
At the head of the “swarm” was Austin Sydrick, until behind him Brad Kaselowski had contact with Joey Logano’s Penske. This contact sent Kaselowski onto Sidric, resulting in the latter making a four-a-ke.
The very small differences of the “swarm” did not leave much room for reaction to all the drivers following, and so the remaining 25, one after the other, collided differentially with the – out of control – cars in front.
After the restart, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who was second when it all started, took his second win of the year. Kaselowski finished just 6 milliseconds behind him, and ahead of William Byron, in an unthinkable three-car photo finish.
