There are many factors and reasons in favor of Spanoulis: his legendary name, his strong personality, his burning desire to coach at the highest possible level, the fact that he is insatiable and ambitious, the respect he enjoys internationally, the excellent writing sample in the first two seasons of his coaching career, his clear ideas in basketball and the fact that due to his age and recent retirement he has contact and communication codes with the active players.
Of course there are three other reasons and in fact with addresses and mainly with names: one is called Giorgos Papagiannis, the other is Nick Kalathis and the third one (possibly even more important) is Mike James!
Spanoulis has the two former captains of Panathinaikos in his work at the National Team, apart from the fact that he was a teammate with Kalathis, while despite the strong rivalry between the “eternals”, he maintains excellent relations with the American guard and in fact in public speaking both appear very generous in their compliments.
On the contrary, one could point to his lack of coaching and management experience at EuroLeague level, the fact that he will be taking a job in the middle of the season and in a team that is not of his making and the peculiar style of French basketball, but obviously from there the Spanoulis will draw additional incentives and invitations.
For the time being and until the agreement is formalized and Spanoulis is available (after the two matches of the national team against Great Britain), the role of Monaco’s official coach has been taken over by Manoutsar Markoishvili, who will guide her already in tomorrow’s match (21/ 11) EuroLeague “civil war” derby against Villeurbanne.
The veteran Georgian international guard/forward has been at Obradovic’s side since 2021 and is highly regarded within the team, even considered as a potential future coach.
A solution will be found
A question that could be raised is whether and to what extent Spanoulis will receive from the EEC the permission of double and parallel employment in the National team and in Monaco, a problem which, by the way, has been thorny in the past and in some cases evolved in casus belli (see Jonas Kazlauskas, Panagiotis Giannakis).
Given that the matches of the National teams in the “windows” and the EuroLeague coincide and even ride on each other, this “duplication” is problematic, but it is obviously given that a solution will be foundas happened with Dimitris Itoudis, Ergin Ataman kok.
Spanoulis will become the fourth Greek coach to sit on the bench of a French team after Ilias Zouros (Paris Rasig 2006-07, Paris Levalois 2007-08), Panagiotis Giannakis (Limoz 2012-13, with partner Nikos Linardos) and Elias Kanzouris (Limoz 2023/24).
