The final verbal agreement with Alafouzos that had been “locked in” since the beginning of October, the “crazy” proposals to Ioannidis from abroad last summer and the promise that was kept. The 24-year-old forward becomes the highest paid Greek in the League.
Things surrounding the new (and highly upgraded) contract of Fotis Ioannidis with Panathinaikos – third since the summer of 2020, when he took the big step and the route from Levadeiakos to Koropi – were completely set in motion by at the beginning of October, when the leader of the “greens” met with Yiannis Alafouzos himself. Since then ending the whole thing with a verbal agreement to extend their partnership until the summer of 2028, with much, much better pay.
At noon on Wednesday (13/11), the details of the whole process were simply sealed, at the final meeting held by the technical director of the “clover” Giannis Papadimitriou with the representatives of Ioannidis, Predrag Djordjevic and Andreas Niniadis, and now the signatures along with the announcements are for the beginning of 2025, for purely formal and bureaucratic reasons…
What is worth pointing out, however, is the fact that Panathinaikos decided to make Ioannidis the highest paid Greek footballer in the Stoiximan Super League, offering him a contract that had never been given before.
And it is clearly much more representative of his role and influence in the team, while at the same time “justifying” the offers of tens of millions of euros that the management of the “clover” rejected last summer for its No1 player.
The… space summer deals
In the previous summer transfer “window”, when proposals for Ioannidis followed one another (from Sporting Lisbon, Bologna, Ipswich, Leicester, Southampton and more), the “suitors” – apart from the offers to Panathinaikos which at some point exceeded 30 million. euro- they also did something else:
They offered very big contracts to the Greek forward in an attempt to… tempt him and lead him to extra pressure towards the “clover”. The Portuguese and Italians reached 1.5 million. euros on an annual basis, and the English went even higher… offering up to 2.2 million. euros with the bonuses. Amounts really very large and more than four times more than the contract that Ioannidis had signed in May ’23 and brought him 500,000 euros plus bonuses.
Great “temptations” to which, however, Ioannidis did not… bend (beyond the racing project of each interested party), since in the discussions he had at that time with Alafouzos, he was first informed that he is not for sale to anyone amount and secondly that the financial part was something that the owner of the “greens” would cover at a corresponding level. Oh, and it happened…
It will exceed 1.8 million. euros per year
The information states that the new contract for which Ioannidis has agreed and will sign at the “dawn” of 2025, will include annual earnings that will exceed 1.8 million. euro. with several and significant bonuses of goals and participations.
In the most “expensive” contract of a Greek football player within… borders and slightly higher than the one signed last January by Tasos Bakasetas with the “clover” (a little over 1.6 million euros per year).
In a fair competitive and moral reward for the 24-year-old international forward, which of course also increases his responsibilities within the team. Although the latter is something he has never been afraid of, as he has been and is always at the forefront of his entire “cloverleaf” journey for the past 4.5 years…
