Human rights organizations are calling on FIFA to suspend the ratification of the vote to host the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia, due to rights abuses in the country.
Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup, since it was the only nomination for the tournament, with him Gianni Infantino to confirm it.
According to a report by nine global human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, FIFA should suspend the vote (December 2024) to ratify Saudi Arabia as host of the 2034 World Cup until the country of the Gulf to proceed with important reforms for the protection of human beings rights.
“There will be a real and foreseeable human cost to awarding the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia if credible guarantees of reform are not obtained,” said Steve Cockburn, head of employment rights and sport at Amnesty International and continued:
“Sports fans will face discrimination, residents will be forcibly evicted, workers immigrants they will face exploitation and many will die.
FIFA must halt the process until appropriate human rights protections are put in place to avoid worsening an already bad situation.”
Saudi Arabia plans to build or renovate 11 stadiums, add nearly 200,000 hotel rooms and complete major infrastructure projects, including the construction of a new city, in order to host the World Cup.
This requires a workforce similar to that which built Qatar’s World Cup infrastructure, working under similar conditions, with similar health risks.
