Intense competition and battles at the top characterized the second leg in the Regularity category of the Historic Rally Acropolis. Vassos Theodosiou-Konstantinos Piperos climbed to the top with the 1974 Lancia Beta Coupe.
Saturday’s leg was the most demanding of the race, with 10 Special Accuracy Tests. The crews started their effort in the morning from Ancient Olympia, crossed the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, passed through Messolongi and ended up in Nafpaktos where the reconstruction took place. Then they passed through Teicheio, Milia and after the night passage through Agia Euthymia, they ended up in Itea, where they spent the night.
A change of pace at the top, with Vasos Theodosiou-Konstantinos Piperos taking the lead in the 1974 Lancia Beta Coupe, with a total of 78.8 penalty points. The duo moved up four places in the second leg and will look to maintain their lead on the third day of racing on Sunday.
To regain the lead of the Historic Rally Acropolis will be the second overall Harald Hekerle-Brigitte Schneider (82.5 bp) with a 1973 BMW E10 2002 Touring, who could not resist the pressure of the leaders.
The Bulgarians Georgi Andonov-Yordanka Andonova climbed third with 90.4 penalty points, having in their hands a Volvo 244 GLE of 1979, who feel the hot breath of Ioannis Katsaounis-Mathiou Mansolas. The crew driving a 1979 Volkswagen Golf I have amassed 90.7 penalty points and will be looking to step onto the race winners’ podium once again.
In a 1968 Morris Mini, Giorgos Georgakopoulos-Tasos Douros are fifth with 94.1 penalty points, followed by the Turkish Champions in their home country, Selim Bacioglu-Handan Bacioglu in a 1975 Mercedes Benz 230/4, having accumulated 105.9 penalty points.
Two places in the general classification were won on Saturday by Iakovos Melanitis-Andreas Pitarakis with Ford Escort RS2000 MKV (108.7 b.p.), with Christos Tsioga-Sotiris Kolliopoulos with Ford Escort MKI of 1968 and 116.8 penalty points to be in ninth place.
The first ten are completed by Dimitris Kalogeras-Christos Diamantopoulos with a 1982 Renault 5 Alpine Turbo and a total of 121.2 penalty points. Triantafyllos Margetis-Maria Margetis (BMW E28 518i/1984) and Aristotelis Ninios-Stelios Voudouris (BMW E28 528i/1984) follow.
Belgians Christian Crucifix-Jennifer Hugo in a 1985 Peugeot 205 lost several places on Saturday, with last year’s race winners Athanasios Ndzoumani-Vassilio Tsombanidis in 14th place overall with one Alfa Romeo Spider S2 of 1972. One place further back are Giorgos Kanellopoulos-Nikolaos Kritsikis with the newest car of the race, a 2000 Toyota Celica TS.
The program of the third and last leg of the race consists of 7 special precision tests. The crews will start in the morning from Itea and will pass through Pentaoria of Fokida, Lefkaditi, Kaloskopi, Viniani and Prosilio and will end up in Itea, where the finish of the race and the Awards will be held.
