LIONEL MESSI
Argentina beat Peru 1-0 in their World Cup qualifier, with Messi once again in the lead as he tallied 58 assists at national team level.
The legendary Lionel Messi is ready to break another record. The Argentina national team leader provided the finishing pass to Lautaro Martinez, with the Inter forward scoring… aerially the Albiceleste’s winning goal in their 1-0 (55′) win over Peru in their qualifier World Cup, for Latin America.
This was Messi’s 58th assist at national team level, which means he has equaled Landon Donovan’s record and is unlikely to break it in the next “window”, next March, when Argentina face Uruguay and Brazil.
The match against Peru was Messi’s last for 2024, either at national or club level, after Inter Miami was eliminated from the MLS playoffs. As for Argentina, with the victory over Peru, they reached 25 points after 12 games and comfortably lead the qualifying group, at +5 from 2nd Uruguay. Six teams from Latin America qualify directly for the final phase of the World Cup.
