ATHLETIC
Diego Simeone in January completes twelve years on the bench of Atletico Madrid, but according to a Spanish publication it is very likely to be a thing of the past this season.
Diego Simeone’s name is completely intertwined with Atletico Madrid. Since the winter of 2011 when he took over the club, he managed to break the Barcelona-Real duopoly (2 La Liga trophies) and turn the Rojiblancos into a European power, counting two appearances in Champions League finals, as well as two Europa League victories in twelve years at the helm of the team.
Despite this, the future of the Argentine in Madrid seems to be ambiguous, since the question of leaving is raised for the second time during his tenure.
According to a Spanish publication, Atletico have recently been looking for his replacement and the possibility of a divorce is open this season after 12 years together.
The reason for this change is due to the fact that Simeone’s previous right-hand man at the club, the sporting director Andrea Berta, is expected to be a thing of the past in the summer and now the power within the club has been gathered by the new director of football, Carlos Booker.
Simeone may no longer have the same influence on management decisions, but it is claimed that his power in the dressing room also appears to have diminished significantly after many years at the club.
