Max Verstappen confirmed after his US GP Sprint triumph that the Red Bull RB20 feels good after a long time, expressing relief that he is again – after months – able to challenge for victories in Formula 1 races.
It was the Dutchman’s first win since the Spanish GP in June, and follows on from Red Bull Racing’s – apparently highly successful – efforts to bounce back, following the installation of its redesigned RB20 floor in Azerbaijan last month.
These changes solved the Milton Keynes car’s major balance – and lack of front-to-rear – axle problems, and Verstappen has now admitted that after a long time the car feels good again.
“It wasn’t that bad, it feels a bit like the old days!”said Verstappen, “I am very happy with today. If we look at the whole match, Ferrari it was also very fast, but for us I think we are finally able to compete again.
Normally in the race we always look behind us, but today we were able to do our own race and we had a good pace”added the champion.
Now, in the 16 Sprints that have been held in F1 since they were paid, Max Verstappen has won 11. When asked why he is so good at these small races, the Dutchman jokingly replied “probably because I don’t like them! It is, of course, always very busy such a three-day period, to bring the car to the right ‘window’ (of operation).
But fortunately, as many times as we had Sprint I think our car was in the right ‘window’. So yes, there is a bit more pressure to get the result, but luckily it works for us.”concluded Max Verstappen.
Unlike the champion, his RBR counterpart Sergio Perez has not found his own RB20’s tuning ‘window’ this fortnight, and is taking advantage of the gap between the Sprint and Qualifying tests to make further changes.
