Now that NFL teams are able to take a step back for the next few weeks with OTAs and mandatory minicamps complete, the long-gestating Jalen Ramsey trade rumors are likely to take centerstage.
Appearing on the Saturday morning edition of SportsCenter, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the Miami Dolphins are “optimistic” about finding a trade partner for the seven-time Pro Bowler:
“This is the next domino to drop league-wide when you talk to other teams, this is the next big move that is anticipated around the NFL. The Dolphins are optimistic that they can work out a deal with Ramsey. Nothing hard and fast developing or imminent right now, but they’ve talked to multiple teams in recent weeks and months. The LA Rams are believed to be still sort of in the mix here. At least that’s a team that others have identified as just the perfect fit. You know, they have a need, they’re familiar with the player, they won a Super Bowl with him, so we’ll see. But the hangup still is that big time money he’s got on his contract, $20-plus million guaranteed for 2025. Teams have a hard time reconciling how much they’re gonna have to pay at that contract.”
Dolphins general manager Chris Grier confirmed they were attempting to trade Ramsey back in April, though he did note the veteran corner didn’t request a deal.
Ramsey hasn’t attended any offseason activities for the Dolphins, including mandatory minicamp last week. Head coach Mike McDaniel said Ramsey wasn’t fined since his absence was excused.
The Los Angeles Rams have been frequently mentioned as a potential landing spot for Ramsey, though head coach Sean McVay told reporters this week there are “some obstacles that are real” possibly preventing a reunion.
It’s unclear if those reasons are related to Ramsey’s contract and the salary cap. The Rams currently have $21.9 million in cap space available.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on Friday’s episode of The Pat McAfee Show that Ramsey prefers a trade to the west coast, with the Rams and Los Angeles Chargers specifically cited as teams of interest to the 30-year-old.
Schefter added he “would expect” Ramsey to be traded before training camp opens.
Ramsey spent four seasons with the Rams from 2019 to ’22. He was named to the All-Pro first team twice and won a Super Bowl during the 2021 season as a member of the team.
The Rams traded Ramsey to Miami in March 2023. He started all 17 games last season, recording 60 combined tackles, 11 passes defensed and two interceptions.
