England caretaker manager Lee Carsley has confirmed that Harry Kane will start in the Nations League clash with Ireland on Sunday (17/11, 19:00) at Wembley.
England captain Harry Kane was benched for the game against Greece on Thursday (14/11) at the OAKA, but came on as a substitute and helped the Three Lions to a 3-0 win, bringing his side close to securing automatic promotion to League A of the Nations League.
However, the England caretaker manager Lee Carsley indicated that the Three Lions captain will start in the final group game against Ireland (17/11, 19:00) and clarified that the decision to stay on the bench on Thursday was a chance for Ollie Watkins to get more experience in major matches with England.
“He will play on Sunday”, Carsley said of the Bayern striker. “Yes, he will start. He is the captain, he is so important to the team. It was just an opportunity to try something different, to give someone else the experience that he hasn’t had many times. It wasn’t about him being left out. It was just an opportunity to give someone else a chance.
I certainly didn’t take Harry Kane out of the team. He has performed very well for me in all the games he has played and participated in. It wasn’t a question of leaving him out, we just gave him a chance.”he added.
“Oli is playing in the Champions League with Aston Villa and is doing really well, so is Morgan Rodgers. It’s great that he got a goal, now it looks like it was the right decision, doesn’t it? He’s got to get a lot of confidence.”
